In her internationally-screened documentary, "Open Eye - Open I," Shirley Barenholz navigates the emotions stirred by tragedy -- she captures how her subjects cope, grieve, and make peace with their trials.
Two of the characters in this film have survived the worst the world has to offer. Barenholz's father is a Holocaust survivor. Her friend and fellow artist, Kinneret Boosany, survived a suicide-bomb attack.
As the title suggests, "Open Eye - Open I" is also a journey of release for Barenholz herself. Through her art exhibit and by observing her more emotionally expressive friends, Barenholz comes to terms with her own loaded past.
In the following clip from "Open Eye - Open I" Barenholz visits Boosany as she recovers from the suicide bombing. We see Boosany in the hospital through various stages of recovery. Eventually she goes home to cope with her new reality. Throughout her struggles we see Boosany serve as an example of emotional freedom and expression for Barenholz.
This is the second clip featured on the Hot Zone from "Open Eye - Open I." The first clip focuses on Barenholz's father and his influence on the photographer. It can be seen here.
