ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: HOT ZONE DOCUMENTARY

Hot Zone Doc., Ch. 12: Nepal and Kashmir

'A World of Conflict,' the documentary about the Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone project, is being shown here in its entirety, one chapter each week.

By the Hot Zone Team, Wed Feb 6, 4:48 PM ET

Chapter 12: Nepal and Kashmir
Kevin Sites covered Nepal during a time of sweeping political change that followed mass nationwide protests, forcing the autocratic King to cede power. The nation was hopeful that new alliances and the Maoist rebels' return to the bargaining table would finally mark an end to their bloody insurgency. But in reports from Katmandu and Maoist territory, Sites found plenty of evidence that past abuses on both sides will make lasting peace a difficult commodity in Nepal.

Kashmir, one of the most beautiful regions on earth, is also one of the most dangerous. Sites covered Indian-controlled Kashmir amid daily outbreaks of violence, including a grenade attack on a tourist bus, even as the Indian Prime Minister visited the region for talks. The toll of the conflict could be seen in a shelter for widows and orphans, and even on the shores of Dal Lake, where families too poor to afford houses on land live on their fishing boats.

"A World of Conflict" is the documentary about the "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone" project, in which veteran war correspondent Kevin Sites reported from every major global conflict in one year, in an effort to understand the costs of a world perpetually at war.

We are highlighting one chapter of the documentary each week in chronological order, allowing you to see the film in its entirety — exclusively online.

The documentary contains searing, never-before-seen images of combat and its lingering impact on civil society, beginning with the anarchy of Somalia in September 2005 and culminating with the explosive war between Israel and Hezbollah in summer 2006.

The documentary is included with Sites' new book, "In the Hot Zone: One Man. One Year. Twenty Wars." (The Harper Perennial paperback original is available now at Amazon.com and at book stores.)

My daughter and I will be going to Nepal in March. We will avoid those areas where trouble might be anticipated if such a thing is possible. Both of us have long time desire to go there. We will not attempt any trekking in or near Mt. Everest, but are hoping for some good weather so that the beauty of the country will be just breathtaking. I have never stayed from anywhere because of the possibility of trouble. That can happen anywhere, any time. My intuition tells me that I am not going to be disappointed. Also, that there will be no serious trouble while I am there.

Great work Kevin. now that you have covered both Kashmir and Afghanistan, I wonder when you will be venturing to Pakistan. Its a conflict zone deeply involved with both the previous regions.

Wow, you are so naive. How sad for you to think that this sort of thing is new, or special, or unique. People groups have been fighting since there have been people groups, and they will continue to fight as long as one group wants something from the other group. I sorry to say this but you sound so innocent, so child-like in your descriptions of the things going on around you. You act as if you come from someplace where people are so civilized, where there is no conflict, never a disagreement, where everyone agrees with everyone's point of view and every resolution is settled to everyone' satisfaction! There is no such fairy tale land. Conflict is as much a part of human nature, as is love, or hate. You reinforce my belief that the world will never be a peaceful place because folks like you, who don't understand that people will fight for what they believe in and some of them, shockingly, will get hurt or killed. People all over the world are fighting for what they believe in, and are willing to make a sacrifice for that belief. Your inability to come to grips with the fighting and dying that you see, helps me understand that you, and folk like you (children of wealthy nations/families that have never had to struggle with the any of the harsher realities of life,in order to survive) don't understand that there really are things worth dying for. One other glaring mistake you make is to refer to acts of terrorism against unarmed civilians as war. That's not war, thats the act of cowards!!! So grow-up and stop reporting like your some 12 year-old child on his first trip out of prep school into the big bad world we live in and being so surprised at what people actually do to each other.

archie765 for president!!! (SEE comment#3). Kevin is this event's 'Scud Stud'. The corporate decision makers see his reporting as a way to put this conflict into an 18-34 year old's perspective. I don't believe he sees this and believe's he's doing "a job well done" per the hundreds or thousands of hits this site gets a day. Like so many other things, the facts don't matter and shouldn't get in the way of a good story, I guess. Whether it's Obama in a turbin, McCain's relationship from 12 years ago, or a picture of HIllary ni front of a devil mascot (see today's most popular pics).

How come the Kurdish Conflict is even not on your watch list? Kurdish conflict with occupying four countries(Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria ) is one of the oldest and largest live conflict in the world now. It involves at least 4 countries and about 40 millions Kurdish people. It has started with Kurdish people unrest against Ottoman Empire in mid 1800, and It is still a very hot and alive conflict. In just last week Syria, Iran and Turkey Killed each numbers of Kurdish demonstrators on the streets, by the demonstrations were ten much larger than in Tibet. If that was not enough, less than a month ago Turkey attacked Kurdish fighters in North Iraq with thousands of soldiers and tens of aircrafts, which took hundreds of people life. The Turkish, Syrian ,Iraq, and Iranian, attacks on Kurdish fighters have not stop even for a day for almost three decades in a row now. No need to mention the world largest chemical attack after World War II by Saddam that killed about 200,000 Kurdish people. I just cannot believe that such a deep, old ,live ,and large conflict is even not in your watch list.????
