Chapter 15: Coming Home
In this final chapter of "A World of Conflict," Kevin Sites returns home to the U.S., only to confirm what he suspected -- that in the year that he was gone little had changed. Most Americans are still not engaged in learning about the rest of the world. But Sites realizes that for some, the Hot Zone project did succeed in putting a human face on global conflict and perhaps helped them to begin their own journey to greater understanding.

"A World of Conflict" is the documentary about the "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone" project, in which veteran war correspondent Kevin Sites reported from every major global conflict in one year, in an effort to understand the costs of a world perpetually at war.

We are highlighting one chapter of the documentary each week in chronological order, allowing you to see the film in its entirety — exclusively online.

The documentary contains searing, never-before-seen images of combat and its lingering impact on civil society, beginning with the anarchy of Somalia in September 2005 and culminating with the explosive war between Israel and Hezbollah in summer 2006.

The documentary is included with Sites' new book, "In the Hot Zone: One Man. One Year. Twenty Wars." (The Harper Perennial paperback original is available now at Amazon.com and at book stores.)

Kevin, I've been following you for some time now and I want to thank you for the GREAT work you've been doing! I must say that I often wondered if you'd ever make it through the whole year and back. I'm so very thankful that you did. Once again, thank you for taking you're viewers on this journey. The very best to you, Dawn

Kevin - You're an innovator. I teach and direct an innovation program at Manchester College. (Manchester College is the home of the first Peace Studies Program in the World.) Innovative techniques to get people in front of people, especially in areas of violence and global conflict are quite valuable I think. But it's the next steps that offer the greatest reward. Identifying them and implementing strategies can be even more valuable. To learn more about what I do, take a look at idea.manchester.edu To learn more you can contact me through the site. Best - Jim

Kevin, I was really amazed and fascinated with the journey you had undertaken in 2006. I have encouraged a student of mine to do a presentation on you and your year’s adventure for her university. She gave an informative presentation on your biography, the Hot Zone saga and more specifically on Gulsoma’s story. With the interest generated from her classmates, I think that you and Yahoo should restart the documentary on your journey. And no I am not saying you do another year, I am sure you would consider that, but you may need to put your family first. Is your website up and running? I am interested in reading your current stories. Best wishes to you, Marian

I have found myself looking in on your hotzone series from time to time, just wanted to let you know that. When I watched your returning home to American video and you weren't sure if people knew what you had been doing or witnessing just wanted to let you know that I had been paying attention and simply wanted to thank you, Katy

As a senior citizen who worries that there are not enough young people like you,I am so glad to see you made it home. Hoping that your series has opened up more people's eyes to condemn war and to find peaceful ways to interact with the world. Things have not changed much since my husband served in Vietnam, but I fear without people like you they would be even worse. I first became acquainted with you when you reported truthfully on Iraq and got in trouble for it. My son-in-law, a Marine, signed up after 9/11 and now realizes that war begets criminal actions and is not the solution.

Kevin, I have really enjoyed your work and have read about your career in Roll!. I am a military broadcaster and work for the Air Foce. Thank you for putting the people out front and the politics behind. The effects of war on the people cannot be debated. The reasons people go to war will be debated for ages. We can't ever forget the faces and that is what you have done. You have allowed the viewer the chance to understand the impact and gave those affected by it a chance to be heard. Great work! I know it must have been hard and I hope you continue after some well deserved rest. I have learned a lot from you and hope to apply some of the principles you put into your stories into my own someday. Warm Regards, Ken R.

Mr. Sites, I have been completely immersed in your stories over the past few years. You've reached a lot of people through your unique brand of journalism. I can only sit here and feel how fortunate I am to have been able to learn and experience the horrors that you have shared with the world and me. Welcome home... "may it ever be so humble...". neil
