Haitian Metal Art: Video

Some in Haiti find creative ways to survive.

By Kevin Sites, Tue May 2, 5:30 PM ET

Transcript (Kevin Sites voiceover):
So many people in Haiti are desperately poor, and they'll find interesting and creative ways to survive — including making artwork.

Now Francois Andre — he's a 48-year-old man — makes metal sculpture out of 50-gallon metal drums.

He takes the drums and makes them flat, pounding them out with a hammer — It's a really labor intensive and painstaking process — and then creates these beautiful sculptures that are hand painted. And they can include almost anything you can imagine: giraffes, birds, palm trees, very intricate sculptures. Anything you can think of, he can make in metal.

But, he does it all by hand, taking a stencil, laying out the stencil over the flattened metal drum and then drawing out the pattern.

Drawing the pattern is the easy part. The hard part is punching out the metal. No machines are used here in the process. It's all done by hand, and it takes about a week to complete a project. But it's drawn out and then pounded out, painstakingly. Each of the little patterns are done by hand and the completed project can be quite elaborate and beautiful.

I just returned from a photo assignment in Haiti's Plateau Central. The metal work is created in Croix de Bouquet...an area outside of Port au Prince. I have three different pieces I purchased on my way to the airport. It is absolutely beautiful amazing work. Haitian seamstress artists are also known for their Drapo Vodou (Voodoo Flag). They are all hand made and each flag represents some sort of Voodoo god or goddess such as Dambalah...a lot of the medical doctors bought these because they represent medicine. Haiti is an incredible place...beautiful culture, art, music...but its peole face so many problems. As far as the metal work...you might be able to find some in Miami around Little Haiti, or in galleries that specialize in Haitian art, but prepare to pay....and usually that money doesn't go back to Haiti.

I am from Haiti and I've living here for 11 years now. I love my home and I tried to get help from others to help the kids that does not have a note book or pencil to go to school. I will be going back to live there just to help the poor. I will encourage all the Haitian to the same. Help our country, there no place like home. fatdamas2002@yahoo.com
