The Death of Innocents

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled

Kashmir - It is more than just difficult. Almost impossible. To understand the violent death of a child. To wonder what rule of nature or man an eight-year-old boy may have violated to deserve this. Having his carotid artery sliced by a shard of hot metal, causing him to bleed to death.

The answer is none. Well, one. Fanal Hamant Zariwala is now on this stainless steel gurney in the morgue of Sheri-i-Kashmir Hospital, because, simply, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The aftermath of a ruthless attack on tourists » View

He was on a tourist bus with his family in Indian-controlled Kashmir when an explosive, some say a grenade, was tossed inside. That is his trespass. His violation. Being alive in a place where daily violence is as certain as the sunrise.

Mountainous Kashmir has been a flashpoint for conflict between India and Pakistan for the last 50 years — the location of two of the three wars fought between the two nations.

Around 1989, Muslim separatists began their own campaign against India's control of the region. Human rights groups estimate as many as 50,000 people have died from an average of 2,500 incidents of terror every year and the Indian security forces' response to them.

But this day's toll, although not unprecedented, was uncommon. It was a direct attack, although police cannot say for certain by whom, on civilian tourists who flock by the thousands every day to what is considered one of the world's most beautiful — and most dangerous — places on earth.

Fanal is just one of the latest casualties, along with three others killed — all children and teenagers. Seven others were wounded. The other dead include a ten-year-old boy named Robin Rakesh, his sister, 15-year-old Krishna, and 18-year-old Kushvu Nirider.

All on the same bus, now all in this same morgue, their young bodies absorbing the blast force and the shrapnel of the explosive.

It is incongruous to see them lying here together. Youth and death. The vestiges of their lives — a dangling earring, sandals, embroidered jeans — adorn broken, lifeless bodies. But outside this room, the heartbreak has voice: the sobbing, screaming, mumbling disbelief of their parents.

At the morgue, chaos and pain » View

"I told him not to sit in the front of the bus," says Hemant Zariwala, Fanal's father, his shirt and jeans covered in his son's blood. "I told him to sit in the back with me but he didn't want to."

When the blast went off, Hemant says he made his way through the smoke to the front, picked up his son, who was unconscious but still breathing, and carried him outside. Police rushed him to the hospital, where he died.

"Why do this to the tourists," he asks no one in particular, his face expressionless from shock. "What have we done?"

In the hospital lobby, Kashmir Tourist Police, used to such scenes, help Hemant remove his bloody shirt and gently slip a clean, black t-shirt over his head.

Vipin Bai, another tourist on the bus, his white undershirt crimson with the blood of the victims, describes the scene to reporters. An unidentified woman, who was also on the bus, embraces him and begins sobbing uncontrollably, her tears mixing with the dried blood on his shirt as he consoles her.

"It's painful when a child dies," says Dr. Ahmad Shah from the hospital's trauma staff. "But we are used to it. This has been going on for 16 years. We've seen this a thousand times over."

But it can hardly make it easier, especially if you arrived to Kashmir with your child seated next to you but must return home with him in a coffin in a plane's cargo hold.

The fact it happened on the last day of widely publicized peace talks between India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh, and separatist leaders from the region makes all of this even more poignant.

When he left, the prime minister was upbeat that the promise of peace would come to Kashmir soon — though it didn't come soon enough for the four small, shattered and blackened bodies lying in one of its hospital morgues.

Azhar, you obviously do not read The Hot Zone on a regular basis. Kevin tells us stories from both sides of the conflict, and ensures we have a solid understanding of each sides perspectives. It is only in doing this can he help us to gain a 360 degree view of the situation. As his Kashmir reports unfold, I think you will find no bias. Take a look at his previous reports and you'll see he is a skilled journalist and not one to take losses on either side as more tragic than another.

It's very boring that some wrong beliefs are behind the terrorism. Believing that wherever there is either Muslims there is terrorist’s attack or rebels… the problem is, fellow my word not my step! However, let’s be assured that no human can bring a lasting peace for mankind. Let’s hope in God for lasting peace and security when the wicked ones will be destroyed. Palms 37: 9, 10 by heavenly Armies.

The Tourist bus was not attacked by any Militant outfit. All main separated parties and Militant outfits in Kashmir condemned this despicable Crime. While Indian Promoted Kashmiri Leaders are busy discussing trades, borders, CBMs, Round Table Conferences, the Kashmiri People continue to face the arrogance, humiliation, injustice, in the state of Jammu and Kashmir at the hands of an unjustified Indian Army presence. Its Crystal clear what wind is blowing in Indian held Kashmir and what "strategies and policies" are being adopted in the region at Gun Point. The deployment of army to curb Fabricated Terrorism, and to "safe guard" non-existent security, is turning out to be a smoke screen to grab the land of Kashmir and populate it with Indian troops with a clear agenda; promotion and encouragement of state terrorism, prostitution, misery, diseases and threat!! First it was Pakistan to play with the aspirations of innocent Kashmiris. It would be wrong to say that Pakistan had established Military TRAINING camps. I’m sorry if the Word "training" is making me laugh out loud. Pakistan does not possess the technical skills to train anyone. "Pakistan was defeated Twice Militarily, there must be a reason." Pakistani establishment simply bring Kashmiri youth from across the border, armed them with weapons, taught them to trigger a Gun and send them back without any adequate training and knowledge about military Operations so that they could be used as gun fodder against well trained Indian Army forces based in Kashmir. Infact, on their way back from PoK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir), most of the militants were easily arrested or killed, is after effect. The consequences of this Frustrated project are bitter; for no reason, more over 100,000 innocent Kashmiri civilians died at the Cruel hands of harsh Indian crackdown, which caused international alarm among human rights groups. 32000 Kashmiri women are widow and today we have more than 40000 orphans, currently with No positive results in the interest of Kashmiris. On one side, while India continues committing atrocities, daily suppression stemming from the murderer, immoral, sick, illiterate, third worlder and corrupt Military Rule imposed in the region, which appear to have no limits in teaching innocent and Non-combatant Kashmiris a lesson, on the other Indian Government exercises the propaganda of "Round Table Conferences" on the international stage. As if all this mass murder and property destruction is not already enough, so to keep on innocent Civilians Drowning by not taking its foot of Kashmiris head, Central Govt, after 16 long years of Gun battle, is with its largest domestic military deployment committed to the region. Today more over 600,000 Indian troops with bunkers next to the doors of local Kashmiris are holding their lives at the Point of Gun. No doubt, Under the current Indian hostile military presence realities, any processes of change becomes ineffective. The rule of law can’t be institutionalised with the Military Forces. The pace towards genuine democracy is uneven when the people are menaced, living under threat and daily mass murder has become the favourite hobby of Indian Government. The state-sponsored terrorism and politically motivated violence perpetrated against non-combatant civilians by military troops, intended to spread waves of misery, shadows of threat, danger of life, coupled with the custodial killings, abduction of under aged innocent boys and girls, torturing of old aged people, property destruction, spreading of diseases through fornication and prostitution policies, that Kashmiries continue to face everyday, lies at the heart of the problem in Kashmir today. Demilitarisation is must for Democracy. To understand this one doesn’t need to be "First Worlder" Scientist!!

This addresses Azhar Basit's comment. First of all, I am sure that it is only mere coincidence that this particular story was regarding tourists. The grenade on this particular occasion targeted a tourist bus, period. I am sure that Kevin did not set out that morning thinking "I am going to report on terrrorism directed at tourism this today." Things simply fell into place that way, unfortunately. Second, I have never observed a biased opinion anywhere on Kevin's site. He reports the facts, and tries to show that humans are suffering on both sided of the war, especially civilian who are caught in the middle of battle zones. Kevin does not ever stick with only one view point, and I am very pleased with the work he does. It is always a tragedy when innocent lives are lost, regardless of political beliefs, staion or nationality. This report is heart-rending and is made more disturbing because the tourist's here were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and completely unaware of their fate. This is a risk that people take however, when they visit a war-torn part of the world. I am glad that there is someone out there with an open mind that does pursue stories that would otherwise, never be told. Thank you, Kevin, for being bold enough to stand in the face of obvious adversity for the cause of truth. God Bless you and keep you safe, my friend. I am one reader who prays for you.
