Chapter 10: Afghanistan

Reporting from Afghanistan in spring 2006, more than four years after the U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taliban, Kevin Sites found that war is not over in the country. Embedded with the 10th Mountain Division near the country's border with Pakistan, Sites documented troops still trying to secure the lawless area, where Taliban and al-Qaida remnants continue to pose a threat. And even as the capital, Kabul, tries to modernize, Sites found tragic examples there of the country's war-scarred past.

"A World of Conflict" is the documentary about the "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone" project, in which veteran war correspondent Kevin Sites reported from every major global conflict in one year, in an effort to understand the costs of a world perpetually at war.

We are highlighting one chapter of the documentary each week in chronological order, allowing you to see the film in its entirety — exclusively online.

The documentary contains searing, never-before-seen images of combat and its lingering impact on civil society, beginning with the anarchy of Somalia in September 2005 and culminating with the explosive war between Israel and Hezbollah in summer 2006.

The documentary is included with Sites' new book, "In the Hot Zone: One Man. One Year. Twenty Wars." (The Harper Perennial paperback original is available now at Amazon.com and at book stores.)

You cannot compare what is happening in Urban areas in the USA, to war zones across the world. This coming from a Marine who just got back from Iraq 5 months ago. It does not compare and I grew up in an Urban area in Los Angeles.

those that say the USA is hotter than the zones portrayed, have not witnessed suicide bombings on a daily basis or artilary, tank an mortar fire. the marine just back from Irak must have been just a desk clerk deep in the green zone. Keep up your courageous work Kevin and team. I hope you get more pop_ups to help with your bills.

Thank you or doing this documentary. My son will be going to Iraq soon and I am trying to understand what this war is about. I am thankful for all the young men that have served in our countries military and just as thankful for all the military parents, sisters & brothers. Reading these pages has provided some insight I had not considered. This goes beyond what we hear on the news. Thank you.
