Three Strikes

Israeli firefighters chase Katyusha rocket impacts in a northern border town as a local high school gets hit for the third time in two weeks.

By Kevin Sites, Mon Aug 7, 9:24 PM ET

KIRYAT SHEMONA,

Israel — For the firefighters of the Kiryat Shemona Brigade in northern Israel, it has been an uncommonly dull day. Some shoot hoops in the parking lot, while others lounge in the office of Fire Chief Shimon Dadon, drinking coffee and watching a kung fu film.

Ethan Rozner, an Israeli Defense Forces reservist assigned to the fire team, sits in a doorway smoking a cigarette next to a scrawny but affectionate mutt the guys at the station house have nicknamed "Katyusha."

They believe it was abandoned by its owners, who likely fled south. An estimated 80 percent of Kiryat Shemona's population left the town once Hezbollah's Katyusha rockets starting falling on the neighborhood.

There is a background soundtrack to this setting. It is the continuous deep crack and whhuuump of outgoing artillery that, by my count, seems to be firing at a rate of one every 30 seconds or so.

At a few minutes to 4 p.m., one of the engine commanders, David Mamone, says we need to get ready to go inside and take cover. Time for the Katyushas.

They are not so regular that the station house can plan around them like some predictable Five O'Clock Charlie dropping a bomb with stubborn and onerous punctuality.

Mamone says the attacks come at any time, morning or night. But the fire department, he says, is privy to military intelligence and some insight into Hezbollah's patterns. This is one of them. At 4 p.m. the town's air raid sirens go off. All of us pack under the cover of the station house.

Off into the distance, due north, a Katyusha pinpricks the hillside, sending up a cloud of gray smoke but little else. Almost immediately, a single engine Piper is circling over the site. The Israeli Fire Department has hired a fleet of them, originally crop dusters, but now retrofitted to spray fire-retardant chemicals on the dry brush often ignited by the rockets' impact.

The planes patrol at will and with little fear, since Hezbollah doesn't have an air force. (An IDF spokesperson says Hezbollah did launch an unmanned spy plane Monday, which Israel claims to have quickly shot down just as it entered Israeli airspace.)

Firefighters respond to the rocket attack» View

At 5 p.m. the air raid sirens go off again and Engine No. 11 rolls out on a call. This time the impact of a rockets is more than just a pinprick. It has landed in a courtyard at Danciger High School, smashing a small retaining wall and creating a six-inch impact crater in the concrete.

But that's not all. The rocket fragments have bounced up, poked the walls of the school's gymnasium and left some broken windows. Red-hot metal has ignited the kitchen section of the building where snacks were prepared. Black smoke is billowing out of the upper windows.

The door to the kitchen is padlocked and one of the firefighters rips into it with an electric saw.

"Water, water," yells another firefighter, running a hose line from the engine to the burning gymnasium.

Within minutes they are spraying the interior of the kitchen, where the walls are already charred.

Because it's summer break and because of the fighting with Hezbollah, the school building was empty. But, if the attack had been at a different time in the day, the outcome come have been much worse.

With the fighting in northern Israel, the school has been turned into a kind of community center for the city, where food supplies and psychological counseling are handed out to local residents. Principal Amir Goldstein says people are in and out of the campus on a daily basis.

He says in the last two weeks the school has been hit three times, including the latest attack.

"I'm very sad about it," he says. "Here it is Aug. 6 and we're scheduled to reopen for classes on Sept. 1. With teachers and students and all of our programs, we're not sure we're going to be able to open the school year like we wanted."

When the fire is out Dadon inspects the impact crater and the damage that was done, but almost as quickly as they arrived the engine team rolls up its hoses, packs its gear and heads back to the station.

Another engine from the same brigade will be called out almost exactly one hour from the time this call was made. They will respond to another rocket attack, this one hitting a nearby school, shearing a hole through a building wall and igniting a grass fire with its exploding debris.

And an hour after that, there will be another call, this one to an Israeli missile battery that has caught fire because of a malfunction.

This is how the evening progresses. In fact, this is what it's like most days and nights for Israeli firefighters all over the north.

A Firefighter and school principal talk about what the Katyusha attack means for the school» View

"We're at 150 percent of our usual capacity," says Moshe Mosko, national spokesman for the Israeli firefighters' union. "I'm not worried about our guys. They can keep this up, but I am worried about the budget."

Mosko says since Israeli firefighters get paid from a complex mix of three different sources: the union, the federal government and the municipality. The chaos of the war has delayed some of those municipal payments. He says some firefighters haven't been paid in a month.

But that financial hardship is easier to bear, some firemen say, than the burden of seeing so many people hurt and killed during this war.

One firefighter says he talked with a friend who responded to the rocket attack that killed 12 Israeli reserve soldiers Sunday. "The bodies were in pieces everywhere," he says his friend told him.

And for some it's not just the sight of Israeli victims that causes anguish. Yigal Ben-Abu has been a firefighter for 15 years in northern Israeli city of Karmiel. He says he was moved to tears when he saw a picture of one of the children killed during the Israeli air strike on the Lebanese village of Qana. I show him some of the pictures I took from the aftermath of that attack, now stored on my computer.

"I'm telling you, I hate the sight of that," he says. "It's a horrible thing, but Hezbolllah has to stop hiding behind women and children. They are using them as human shields."

Closer to the more hectic Lebanese border area, few of the firefighters of Kiryat Shemona have the energy to talk much about the causes and effects of the war.

Serenaded by incessant thunder of outgoing artillery, they simply wait for the next barrage of rockets to fall. After the explosions, the firefighters will do the only thing they can do — contain the destruction until both sides stop firing.

“the great unfortunate fact about Israel’s creation—being carved by the U.N. out of Arab land in 1947—cannot be ignored or wished away. We have no choice but to support Israel, even though the Israeli Defence Forces are killing civilians, dozens a day, in Lebanon. All of those deaths, one wants to believe, are unintentional, unavoidable mistakes. Israel itself is a mistake . . . an honest mistake, a well-intentioned mistake, a mistake for which no one is culpable (but which) has produced a century of warfare and “terrorism” of the sort we are seeing now. Sixty years on, there can be no revising or reversing that mistake—and when the choice is Israel versus Islam, we must be for Israel. Is there any more inconvenient truth?” (Richard Cohen wrote in his Washington Post column last week) Richard Cohen is a little emotional that is why he mentioned words like “no one is culpable”, I would like to remind him that After all, it was not the Palestinians who “gassed” the Jews, it was Europeans. And it was not Palestinians who refused to accept some shiploads of Jews who left National Socialist Germany in the 1930s, it was America!! If on once side, it is not difficult to understand the American’s refusal of Jews in 1930s, but on the other it is appalling how out of nowhere, all of a sudden, it is “supporting” the crimes Zionists are committing against the Lebanese and Palestinian people for moreover 60 years. Americans should call on members and supporters to mobilise rank-and-file workers and broad sections of the people to bring to power in America an anti-war government which upholds the right of all nations to their sovereignty and opposes the use of force to settle conflicts. Such a government must demand the enforcement of the Palestinian people's right to build a modern nation-state that can come to an accommodation with all people living in the Palestinian homeland, free of the constant threat posed by the foreign military base in their midst known as “Israel”. Such a government must also hold so called “Israel” to account for its violation of more than 70 United Nations resolutions, beginning with Resolution 273 which made Israel's membership to the UN conditional on its implementation of Resolution 181 which defined the borders of partitioned Palestine and Resolution 194 which proclaimed the Palestinian refugees inalienable right of return. Since 1949, “Israel” has refused to implement Resolution 273. In other words, “Israel” is a rogue state and the American government's position in support of Israel is in complete violation of international rule of law. Now, Israel has launched a seventh war against Lebanon in less than 60 years of the failed Zionist colonial project. Israeli atrocities and massacres of Lebanese civilians are so numerous, it has even repeated a heinous war crime on the same town of Qana that it attacked 10 years ago. Israel was carved out of the homeland of the Palestinians who were forcibly displaced in an orgy of ethnic cleansing following the Second World War. The right of return by those driven from their homes by this forcible displacement was supposedly recognised by the United Nations. Israel responded to the Palestinians' right of return with a 60-year campaign of extermination and brutal suppression. It has constantly expanded its land holdings by driving out the original inhabitants and replacing them with people of the Jewish faith from all over the world. Millions of Palestinians live as refugees or in refugee camps far from their homeland. Those who remain in Palestine are surrounded by an apartheid wall, hemmed into fractured "Bantustans" on a fraction of their homeland. They are subjected to daily racist humiliation and death at the hands of the Israeli armed terrorist forces. The continuous anti-Arab, anti-Muslim Zionist catastrophes unleashed in West Asia and Northeast Africa could never have taken place without powerful sponsors and their above mentioned “mistakes”. Right from the beginning the small colony of mostly European Zionists was a project of the big powers to control the markets and raw materials of West Asia and Northeast Africa and to assert their hegemony over the region. The Zionist colony evolved from a beachhead mainly of British imperialism into a ferocious military force of U.S. imperialism. Official and unofficial money and war material pouring into this Fake state of Israel from the United States turned the Zionist colony into a quasi-mercenary army base for a section of U.S. imperialism. Israel's so-called citizen army is a permanent standing army with the most advanced Weapons of Mass Destruction supplied mainly by the United States and Britain. In three weeks Israeli air power has reduced much of Lebanon to rubble. A relatively small number of soldiers simply lob bombs into Lebanon and into those small parts of Palestine they do not occupy. The anti-Arab, anti-Muslim Zionist zealots that control the illegal “Israel” and its military Terrorists are colonial settlers that refuse to come to any accommodation with the original inhabitants of Palestine.

They are a force for nation-wrecking, destruction, war crimes and slaughter. So called Israel, a failed colonial project, has never developed beyond its role as a destabilising and pillaging military beachhead of the big powers. Seven wars with Lebanon are enough! Constant wars with Palestinians are enough! The people of West Asia and Northeast Africa deserve the unity and co-operation of the world's peoples to be free of the failed colonial project known as “Israel” that has degenerated into nothing but a foreign military base on occupied Palestinian land controlled by anti-Arab, anti-Muslim Zionist zealots. As the on-going destruction of Lebanon by Zionist forces continues well into its fourth week, there is an unquestionable rise of hostile sentiment against the policies of outlawed Zionist regime and its prime ally, the “great” United States of America and the administration of Mr. Danger, George Hitler Bush in particular on the Arab street and World in general. While there may be some political restraint shown by some of the governments in the world towards this unchecked barbarism and increased diplomatic overtures towards an immediate halt, there is no doubt where the true feelings of the masses lie, knowing already the course of the inception of this illegitimate State of “Israel” and damage through the mistake of its “settlement” caused on Arab countries. It is a crime when nations stand by or get embroiled in diplomatic manoeuvres to favour one party while innocent people of the other party are getting killed everyday. Since 1948, World have witnessed enough of the “fraudulent manoeuvres” to settle the state of “Israel” at the bitter cost of Palestine causing suffering and destruction of its population, property and all other living resources. And now the Lebanese who have been losing unnecessary unarmed civilian lives while the world leaders hum and haw away with the intent to bring this another sovereign country on knees. After this further proof of Zionist aggression in the region which they have craftily painted a picture of self-defence and the west has eagerly swallowed their version of the conflict, makes to think that West have no choice but to defend their “mistake” aka Israel. How many in the west know that southern Lebanon and the occupied territories have been under consistent Israeli attacks months before the capture of the soldiers. Palestinian and Lebanese civilians were being shot and killed daily, while Israel protested that such incidents were honest mistakes. The fact remains that the US is currently using Zionist State to push forward their vision of a “greater Middle East”, as they themselves cannot get out of the sordid mess they have created in Iraq and Afghanistan. The policies of Hitler Bush and company are to ensure that only “Israel” remains a military power in the region. This will allow them to continue with their expansion plans. Its important to note that, contrary to public opinion back home, there has been no period of truce during the months leading to the capture of the Zionist soldiers. And if you want proof, ask the mothers of the Palestinian and Lebanese children killed this year before this latest circus of carnage began. It is time to embargo the United States, period. They are the primary force behind Zionist aggression in the region. They will never waver in their blind support of the terrorist policies of Israel, regardless of reason or national interest. They have single-handedly vetoed every move by other nations to demand an immediate cease-fire and supply multi-national forces to ensure peace. In the new UN resolution, Peace is not their agenda for the region. One wonders, if Danger Bush is so blinded and in love with these transplanted East European Zionists who are squatting on land they have taken by illegally and by force, why does he not generously declare Wyoming or Utah as their new homeland? I am sure they would be welcomed with open arms by the existing tenants!!

Images of piles of dead bodies, stories of Nazis gassing millions of Jews and then using some of their corpses to make soap (this claim has since been retracted but not until solemn and emotional funeral ceremonies were conducted for bars of soap), movies depicting the Jews being brutalised under the power of Nazi Germany have all served to indelibly ingrain the official account of the Holocaust on the minds of the sheeple. In fact, most Americans can tell you the magic number of Jews who were allegedly killed in the Holocaust (6,000,000) but they can’t tell you the total number of people who died died in WWII. 11.8 million including 407,300 Americans. This demonstrates the power and bias of the media and the power of the idea of Jewish Holocaust. Anyone who openly questions the official story of the Holocaust is attacked as anti-Semitic and sometimes they’re attacked physically. In much of Europe it is prison for anyone who dares to question the Holocaust! Currently the historian and author David Irving, the historian who debunked the Hitler Diaries, is serving three years in an Austrian prison for raising questions about the Holocaust. Shortly after being arrested, he pulled a Galileo and told the court he changed his mind, the Nazis did gas the Jews. However, the Austrian court was not as lenient as the Inquisition and sentenced him to three years in prison, anyway. What kind of effect does locking people up for their ideas and speech have on the best road to progress, the free exchange of ideas? Where is so called “democracy” claimed by West in western countries? It was recently reported that Germany is going to release thousands of documents from the National Socialist period that would shed more light on the Holocaust. But what historian is going to look at them objectively knowing that doing so could not only ruin his or her career but would actually land them in prison? It makes me think, first they came for those who questioned the Holocaust, . . . ! Maybe in the near future the government will classify anyone who doesn’t support Israel as a terrorist and lock them up. One of the things served by blind acceptance of the Holocaust is the Jewish state of Israel. If they get any serious opposition, they play the Holocaust card and quickly silence their opponents, whether they be politicians, historians or journalists. The effect this has had on the world is devastating. Just look at Palestine and Lebanon!! Israel is making full use of the BILLIONS and BILLIONS of tax-dollars worth of American military equipment the politicians and US tax payers have given them! To date, Zionists have killed well over 2.300.000 Arabs and created over 7.000,000 refugees since its inception in 1948!! And all the victims who survive know who gave Israel the jets, helicopters and missiles and bombs they’re used against them and their families. This of course is one of the main reasons that today world became insecure for the Americans. The very fact that “the Holocaust” is meant to mean only the systematic extermination of the Jews demonstrates a quality of uniqueness for the Jews. Of course, the Jews are not the only ones to have suffered a holocaust. For example, the Irish people suffered a holocaust that governments still call the “Potato Famine”. The Irish died from starvation by the hundreds of thousands not because there was no food for them, but because the controlling British government would not let them eat any other food. And a much larger and more deadly holocaust was suffered by the Russian and Ukrainian peoples because the Communist government of the Soviet Union was so full of rage and hate for the people who refused to give up their land, homes and way of life to satisfy a government dictate. From 1929 to 1933, the Communist government waged a war against the farmers and peasants of Russia, killing millions, and then focused on Ukraine from 1932 to 1933. In all, the number of people killed by the Soviet government was 14.5 million. (For a well documented look at this holocaust, read Harvest of Sorrow by Robert Conquest.) This is more than double the number that is attributed to the Jewish holocaust. Yet, there are no Hollywood blockbusters made about this holocaust. In fact, the Communists were the allies of the US and the UK during WWII. If we hate Nazis because they murdered six million Jews, shouldn’t we hate Communists because they murdered more than double that number in Russian and the Ukraine alone? Shouldn’t the US and other world governments treat Communist China even worse than it treated National Socialist Germany? After all, Communist China murdered 35,200,000 people. The total number of people murdered in holocausts by Communist governments is 108,700,000!!!

This quality of Jewish uniqueness that is found in the word “holocaust” has its roots all the way to the beginning of the Jewish race ( the Jews are biologically of the Semitic race, just as the Arabs are) and the origin of its traditions. In the Old Testament that the ancient Jews wrote, they claim God chose them “above all people on the face of the earth.” Deuteronomy 7:6 This unreasonable, unrealistic and twisted thought can only lead to more violence and war as we are witnessing today in the Middle East. In the outstanding book by Norman G. Finkelstein, “The Holocaust Industry”, the connection between the Jewish state of Israel and the Jewish holocaust is pointed out. Finkelstein writes, “The claims of Holocaust uniqueness are intellectually barren and morally discreditable, yet they persist. The question is, Why? In the first place, unique suffering confers unique entitlement. The unique evil of the Holocaust, according to Jacob Neusner, not only sets Jews apart from others, but also gives Jews a “claim upon those others.” For Edward Alexander, the uniqueness of The Holocaust is “moral capital”: Jews must “claim sovereignty” over this “valuable property”. He goes on to write, “In effect, Holocaust uniqueness--this “claim” upon others, this “moral capital”--serves as Israel’s prize alibi. “The singularity of the Jewish suffering”, historian Peter Baldwin suggests, “adds to the moral and emotional claims that Israel can make . . . on other nations”. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants a world conference to be held to investigate the claims made about the Jewish holocaust. As he said, "Not allowing any research proves that there is a problem and something is fishy." If the Jewish holocaust really did happen the way organised Jewry and world governments insist, then Ahmadinejad’s “call” for “Israel to be wiped off” the Islamic map and moved to Europe or America makes sense. Why should the Palestinians be forced to give up their homes and land to the Jews because of something they played absolutely no part in? And if the study finds the Jewish holocaust is nothing to be compared with other Real holocausts mentioned above, then a key reason for the Jewish state of Israel does not exist. Another way Israel profits from the idea of the Jewish holocaust is that the Jewish holocaust gives them an excuse to make and possess real weapons of mass destruction. Israel is the only nation in the Middle East with nuclear bombs and missiles. The only American President who ever opposed Zionists becoming armed with atomic bombs was President Kennedy. Every president after him has let Zionists do what they want even though they should be beholden to the US for the billions of US tax dollars Americans give them every year!!
